Due to a hereditary disease, Borges went blind at the age of 50. Besides teaching literature at the University of Buenos Aires, he was appointed director of the National Library in 1955. When he won the inaugural Prix Formentor International Publishers Award in 1961, he garnered recognition on a global scale. His works have been widely translated and published in both Europe and the United States. In Geneva, Switzerland, he passed away in 1986.
